Why Don't You Make the Twins Your "Girlfriend" Together? Volume 1 Side Story 3

Twin Talk! ③ Together Before the Date…

That night, after returning from Western-Style Dining Kanon, Hikari and Chikage gathered in Chikage’s room. With Chikage’s date with Sakuto confirmed for the next day, they were holding a last-minute strategy session.

“So, Chii-chan, remind me again why I’m the one practicing princess-carrying you?” Hikari grunted, her arms trembling beneath her sister’s weight.

“P-Practice…” Chikage stammered, trying to keep a neutral expression. “So I don’t make a weird face if he… if he decides to carry me…”

“I really don’t see that happening,” Hikari said, struggling for breath. “No, wait, shouldn’t Sakuto-kun be the one practicing this? Besides──you’re heavy!”

“Heavy!?” Chikage shrieked, her voice cracking. “N-No way! Should I go on an emergency diet!?”

“A bit late for that, don’t you think~?” Hikari teased, her own muscles screaming in protest. “This is more a problem with my lack of… ah!”

With a final yelp, Hikari’s strength gave out, and she unceremoniously dropped Chikage onto the soft mattress. Chikage bounced once before scrambling upright, her hands flying to her cheeks in a panic.

“What am I going to do if Sakuto-kun thinks I’m heavy~?” she wailed.

“I’m sure it’ll be fine,” Hikari said, collapsing beside her. “Better that than him calling your personality ‘heavy,’ right?”

“Th-That’s true, but I meant physically!”

“Mmm… I really think you’re fine in that department, you know?”

Exhausted, Hikari lay sprawled on the bed.

“Hey, Hii-chan…” Chikage began softly.

“What’s up?”

“About the date tomorrow… are you sure it’s okay for just me to go? What about you…?”

“It’s totally fine! I’ve got the day after tomorrow,” Hikari declared, propping herself up on her elbows. “And then~, with Sakuto-kun~, I’m gonna do a little of this, and a little of that~… heheh ♪” A sly grin spread across Hikari’s face, her cheeks flushing a delicate pink.

“Wh-What are you planning on doing!?” Chikage demanded, her own face turning beet red as she straightened into a formal sitting position on the bed. “Give me the details! All of them!”

“That’s~ a secret,” Hikari cooed. “But, seeing as we’ve already kissed~…”

“You’re not planning to go even further, are you!? Don’t you dare leave me behind…!”

“Well then, Chii-chan, you’ll just have to give it your all tomorrow~” Hikari said, reaching over to pat her sister’s head affectionately.

To Hikari, Chikage was a truly adorable little sister. She had no intention of giving up Sakuto, but as the older sister, she couldn’t stand the thought of being the only one having all the fun.

That’s why she had to give her a little push.

This desire to see Chikage──who had so little self-esteem──try her best might have been a little warped. She was aware of that. And yet, she felt surprisingly little jealousy toward her sister. She figured that, just as much as she loved Sakuto, she truly loved Chikage, too.

“But… when it actually comes down to it, I guess I’m still scared…” Chikage confessed, her voice barely a whisper.

“You think so? Sakuto-kun is a pretty considerate guy. I’m sure you’ll be fine even if you mess up a little, you know? You don’t need to be such a perfectionist.”

“M-Maybe, but…”

This is where I have to step in as the older sister.

I can’t just leave my troubled little sister to fend for herself. But more than that, as both her sister and his girlfriend, I can’t send this unconfident version of her to trouble Sakuto tomorrow.

“Alright, leave it to me!”

With a newfound resolve, Hikari dashed out of the room and returned just as quickly, a small, sleek device held carefully in her hand.

“Hii-chan, what’s that?” Chikage asked, eyeing the object curiously.

“Heheh. As long as you use this without Sakuto-kun noticing, everything will be fine!”

“Huh? What do you mean, without him noticing?”

“Only one way to find out,” Hikari said, her grin widening as she advanced on her sister. “Shall we try putting it in…?”

“Eek!? Wait, Hii-chan!? S-So suddenly… ah──”

Before she could react, Chikage found herself pushed back onto the bed. Hikari straddled her stomach, her face just inches away, a playful glint in her identical eyes. Chikage stared up at her sister, a familiar yet distant reflection of her own.

Even though we have the same face, why does my older sister look so much more beautiful? Is it because she has something I don’t? Maybe it’s because she has so much more experience… in all sorts of things…

“Chii-chan, can I see your right ear?” Hikari asked gently.

“Um… ah… ah…” A strange, flustered sound escaped Chikage’s lips as Hikari’s fingertips brushed against her right ear. It was an incredibly sensitive spot for her; she couldn’t even stand someone breathing near it, yet here Hikari was, playfully fiddling with her earlobe.

“Are you… messing with me…?” she managed to ask, her voice trembling slightly.

“Nope, just checking,” Hikari replied cheerfully. “I was just thinking mine are softer.”

“And what about it…?”

“Heheh. It’s a little charm to make sure he doesn’t get us mixed up,” Hikari whispered, her breath warm against Chikage’s skin. “Alright, shall we get to it?”

A mischievous giggle echoed right next to Chikage’s ear.

“Huh? W-Wait a second…!”

“I haven’t used this in a while, but I don’t think it’ll hurt…”

“Wha…? Wai──… Oof~…”

Chikage squeezed her eyes shut, bracing for the worst. But all she felt was a strange, cool sensation settling into her right ear. Tentatively, she opened her eyes.

“…Huh? What’s this?”

She reached up and touched the object. From its hard, smooth shape, she already had a hunch. What had been inserted into her right ear was simply an earbud.

“It’s one of those AirPods I used to use,” Hikari explained, hopping off her. “I have proper headphones now, so I wasn’t using it. It’s all yours, Chii-chan.”

“Um… I have a pair, too…”

“Now, now. It’s a kind gesture from your big sister. You should accept it gratefully.”

Chikage removed the earbud. Just as she suspected, it was a standard wireless earbud, the same kind she already owned.

“…So, what are you planning to do with this earbud?” she asked, still confused.

“Heheh. Isn’t it obvious?” Hikari said, waving her own smartphone back and forth with a triumphant grin.

“──Ah! So that’s what this is about!”

The realization finally dawned on Chikage, and with it, a wave of embarrassment washed over her, turning her cheeks bright red.

“…I mean, Hii-chan… you always have to make things so complicated~…” she mumbled, averting her gaze.

“…? Why?”

Was Hikari just being dense, or was it something else? She was simply unbeatable, pulling off these kinds of seductive moves so casually and without a hint of ulterior motive.

Could this be how Sakuto fell for her?

The thought was deeply unsettling for Chikage.

No. If she got serious, she had just as much potential as her sister. She had to.

Because we’re twins. Probably. Surely──

Though her sister was offering her help, Chikage steeled her resolve, telling herself that from now on, she would have to try even harder on her own.
